Thomas Steininger in dialogue with Tomas Björkman
In the accumulation of crises that we are living through right now, it is easy to forget that crises are often a birthing process of the new. Where are the birth places of a coming future and what are these places about? In this time of collapse and dystopian discourse, where are signs of a new beginning? Tomas Björkman, a theorist and an integrative figure in the metamodern movement, sees new potential percolating around the world.
For more than ten years, a movement has been forming around the globe that tries to envision a culture and society beyond both modernity and postmodernity. They attempt to go further than the postmodern critique of modernist Western culture. Now, this metamodern movement is coming of age. Björkman is both a catalyst and chronicler of this metamodern emergence.
What is Björkman witnessing? A new, younger generation is looking for creative ways to hold this explosion of complexity that our time seems to be embedded in. Under the radar of the news media, there are many new experiments--what one could call “laboratories” of a metamodern or integral culture.
